A Daily Step of Faith

One of my favorite books as a teen was Anne of Green Gables. I used to read the whole series every spring, and it seemed like every year, a different chapter of Anne’s life would resonate with me. One quote from the Anne books came to mind this week:

“Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it yet.”

As much as I love this quote, and the idea that each day is fresh and new, it always draws my mind to something even better:
“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is Thy faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23

Each morning when I wake up, I face a fresh day, a day never lived before! And each morning when I wake up, a fresh, undepletable supply of God’s mercy is there as well.

But I have been challenged recently to take my days, not just as a fresh start, but also as a step of faith.

Proverbs 27:1 says,

“Boast not thyself of to morrow, for thou knowest no what a day may bring forth.”

I don’t know what each day will bring, but God does. As I start each day, I can choose to live my day in faith, or in unbelief.

This concept of each day being a step of faith has helped me this week, as I begin to make the transition into a new schoolyear. I have known for a few weeks that God wants me to be more invested in my teaching this year, and have begun doing some extra studying to prepare myself.

Balancing writing, teaching, ministry, and the people God has put in my life is a struggle during the schoolyear, and it is so easy to set my mind on what I would rather be doing, or what I get to do later in the week, instead of keeping my eyes fixed on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2)

The point is, the will of God is not just an overarching idea of how my life should go. As I begin each day, I must choose to respond in faith to His will for my moments, as well as my years. Galatians 2:20 says,

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me.”

To live by faith means, in part, accepting today as a fresh gift of His mercy. I can step out in faith each day, choosing to trust that whatever it holds, He has already planned to help me through it for His glory, and for my good.

How about you? What steps of faith is God calling you to make this week?

“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto Thy name, O most High: To shew forth Thy lovingkindness in the morning, and Thy faithfulness every night.” Psalm 92:1-2
