Give Thanks for God’s Goodness
A common phrase in the book of Psalms is, “O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good” One of the places it appears is in the first verse of Psalm 136, which then goes on to mention many specific instances of His goodness, in creation as well as in His dealings with mankind throughout history.
God’s goodness is certainly a crucial attribute, for if God were not good, He would not be trustworthy, nor would He be holy, nor would He be just or merciful.
God’s goodness is also an attribute which brings hope and comfort to our hearts in times of distress or trouble. David said, “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” (Psalm 27:13) Aren’t you glad God’s goodness isn’t only seen in heaven? His hand of goodness can be seen in every corner of our lives, if we will just pay attention to it. (click here for a previous post about remembering to look for God’s goodness)
Because God is good, we can trust Him. Because He is good, we know that He will surely fulfill the promise of Romans 8:28 to work all things together for our good. Because He is good, we can rest in the certainty that His sovereignty will always be wielded in perfect righteousness.
