Give Thanks for God’s Mercy

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and, for many, the Christmas season has begun. But gratitude to God should be more than just a November event. Our hearts should be giving thanks all year round for the manifold blessings of the Lord.

Psalm 107 says, “O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever.”

The next 40 verses are a summary of God’s mercy towards His people throughout their history.

Over and over, they found themselves in trouble, and over and over God delivered them, whether they had brought that trouble on themselves or not. This psalm always makes me think of just how much mercy God has shown to me when my life has resembled the cycle of sin, judgement, repentance, forgiveness, and blessing the Israelites displayed throughout the Old Testament.

God’s mercy is never more on display than in His plan of redemption. As we transition from Thanksgiving to the Christmas season, our hearts should not lose the sense of gratitude to God, for the whole reason Christmas exists is because God was merciful.

Galatians 4:4-5 says, “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons”

And, of course, we can’t forget the beauty of John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

As you begin the Christmas season, remember to continue to give thanks to God for His mercy.
